The Reason Most Beginner Gardens Fail

Most beginner gardens fail because the gardener picked the wrong plants for the wrong season.

The Salsa Garden is eight varieties chosen for one specific outcome: a backyard that can produce real homemade salsa by late summer.

Roma tomatoes for the body. Cherry tomatoes for snacking. Tomatillos for green salsa. Jalapeños for heat. Sweet bell peppers for color and crunch. Cilantro and scallions for the bright top notes.

In weeks, you are not buying salsa anymore. You are making it.

  • Roma VF Paste Tomato

Meaty, low water content, perfect for cooking down into thick salsa or sauce. The "VF" means it resists Verticillium and Fusarium wilt – diseases that ruin most home tomato gardens.

  • Jalapeño M

The classic Mexican-cuisine jalapeño. Medium heat (2,500-8,000 Scoville). Productive and prolific. Pick green for medium heat; let ripen red for sweeter and hotter.

  • Toma Verde Tomatillo

The husked tomato relative that's the foundation of every salsa verde. Two plants give you enough tomatillos for an entire salsa season.

  • Geisha Garlic Chives

Mild garlic flavor without growing actual garlic. Perfect for people who don't love cilantro. Snip directly into the salsa.

  • Mini Chocolate Bell Pepper

Heirloom dark-brown bell pepper. Compact plant – no staking needed. Sweet, mild, and visually striking – color contrast in fresh salsa.

  • Tokyo Long White Onion

The salsa scallion. Bright top notes that finish a good salsa. Cut the green tops; the white base keeps growing for months.

  • Matt's Wild Cherry Tomato

The sweet pop for fresh pico de gallo. Disease-resistant, prolific, beginner-friendly. The wild ancestor of cherry tomatoes – small, sweet, and forgiving.

  • Slow Bolt Cilantro

The cilantro that does not bolt before you can use it. Standard cilantro flowers and goes bitter in two weeks; slow-bolt varieties last twice as long.

The 0% Failure Guide

Most gardening guides assume you already know what "open-pollinated" means. Or what "bolt" is. Or why "F1 hybrid" matters.

We do not.

Every piece of teaching that comes with this bundle is written for the person who has never planted a thing. When we use a word that gardeners use but everyday people might not, we explain it. Plainly.

You will not need a translator. You will not need to Google "USDA hardiness zone" mid-sentence.

The handbook that ships with every seed bundle covers:

- A full plant profile for each of the 8 varieties – when to sow, how deep, how often to water, when to harvest, what could go wrong

- A no-jargon glossary explaining every gardening term in plain English (bolt, hardiness zone, cultivar, open-pollinated, all of it)

- Troubleshooting for the most common beginner failures – "they came up and then died," "nothing sprouted," "they bolted before I could harvest"

- A sowing calendar so you know exactly when to plant for your part of the country

- The basics of seed-saving so next year's garden costs you nothing

Questions?

When can I plant these seeds?

The Salsa Garden is mostly warm-weather crops – tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, cilantro need warm soil. Plant after your last frost when nights stay above 50°F. Most Salsa varieties need to be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost OR transplanted as nursery seedlings. The handbook walks you through both paths.

Do I need special equipment?

No. You need soil (raised bed, garden bed, or pots), sun (6+ hours minimum for tomatoes), water, and seeds. Tomatoes and peppers benefit from staking or caging – simple cages cost a few dollars. Most beginner gardeners overspend on equipment before they have grown anything. Start with the seeds and a few stakes.

How long until I can harvest?

Cherry tomatoes are ready in 65-75 days from transplant. Roma tomatoes 75-85 days. Peppers 75-85 days. Tomatillos 75-85 days. Cilantro and scallions earlier (45-60 days). Plant after last frost; pick the first salsa-ready harvest by August in most US zones. Full timing is in the handbook and digital quick-reference cards.

What if I have never gardened before?

This bundle works for first-time gardeners – the varieties tolerate beginner mistakes. The handbook teaches you why each plant behaves the way it does. Pick one variety and start there – do not feel like you have to plant everything at once. Cherry tomatoes are the most forgiving starting point.

Do I get instructions with the seeds?

Yes. Every seed bundle includes:

The Herbly digital handbook – deep teaching on every variety, troubleshooting, and a sowing calendar for your zone.

– Per-variety digital quick-reference cards – at-a-glance info to pull up on your phone while you are in the garden.

Our gift bundle also ships with the printed handbook for the kitchen-counter reference experience.
