The Reason Most Beginner Gardens Fail

Most beginner gardens fail because the gardener picked the wrong plants for the wrong season.

The Kitchen Herb Garden is eight varieties chosen for the opposite reason – they are the most forgiving plants in any vegetable garden, and they earn their place in your cooking week after week.

Basil for summer pesto. Parsley for everything. Cilantro that won't bolt. Rosemary that lasts years. Sage and thyme for slow-cooked Sunday meals. Oregano for pizza. Chives for the eggs.

Grocery-store herbs cost $3 a bunch and last four days. These eight plants will give you fresh herbs every day for years.

  • Genovese Basil

The pesto basil. Classic Italian heirloom with big, soft, fragrant leaves. One plant gives you enough for a summer of pesto. Pinch the flowers to keep it producing leaves.

  • Single Parsley

The flat-leaf parsley used in nearly every cuisine. Cleaner, brighter flavor than curly. Grows almost indefinitely – cut, and it comes back.

  • German Winter Thyme

Cold-hardy thyme that survives mild winters as a perennial. Tiny, woody, intense leaves – the herb that finishes roast chicken, eggs, and most slow-cooked dishes.

  • Greek Oregano

The real Mediterranean oregano. Sharper and more concentrated than what's in the grocery jar. Dried Greek oregano keeps for years and tastes like the herb actually used to.

  • Slow Bolt Cilantro

The cilantro that does not bolt before you can use it. Standard cilantro flowers and goes bitter in two weeks; slow-bolt varieties last twice as long.

  • Common Rosemary

Evergreen woody shrub. Once established it lives for years and provides fresh rosemary on demand. The herb that finishes potatoes, lamb, and bread.

  • Broad Leaved Sage

Tea-cup-sized fuzzy gray-green leaves. Strong herb that defines roasted poultry, brown-butter pasta, and stuffing. Drought-tolerant — thrives on neglect.

  • Common Chives

Perennial onion family that comes back every year. Mild onion flavor, bright purple flowers (edible). The herb on baked potatoes, eggs, and soup.

The 0% Failure Guide

Most gardening guides assume you already know what "open-pollinated" means. Or what "bolt" is. Or why "F1 hybrid" matters.

We do not.

Every piece of teaching that comes with this bundle is written for the person who has never planted a thing. When we use a word that gardeners use but everyday people might not, we explain it. Plainly.

You will not need a translator. You will not need to Google "USDA hardiness zone" mid-sentence.

The handbook that ships with every seed bundle covers:

- A full plant profile for each of the 8 varieties – when to sow, how deep, how often to water, when to harvest, what could go wrong

- A no-jargon glossary explaining every gardening term in plain English (bolt, hardiness zone, cultivar, open-pollinated, all of it)

- Troubleshooting for the most common beginner failures – "they came up and then died," "nothing sprouted," "they bolted before I could harvest"

- A sowing calendar so you know exactly when to plant for your part of the country

- The basics of seed-saving so next year's garden costs you nothing

Plus: We read every email personally. If you get stuck, hit reply on any Herbly message. You get an actual person who can help, not a chatbot.

  • Heirloom · Open-Pollinated

Every variety in the bundle is open-pollinated heirloom. Save the seeds from your harvest and grow them again next year.

  • Licensed Florida Seed Dealer

Every Herbly seed is professionally tested for germination before we pack it. This is what real seed quality looks like.

  • Free Shipping Over $45

Standard shipping is 3-5 business days. Every bundle is packed by hand from our sunny Florida garden.

  • Guidance, Not Just Seeds

The handbook walks you through every step. And if you ever get stuck, hit reply on any Herbly email – we'll respond personally. You are not on your own!

Questions?

When can I plant these seeds?

Most herbs prefer warm weather. Basil, parsley, and cilantro can be sown directly after last frost. Perennial herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, chives) are typically started indoors 8-10 weeks before transplant – OR you can grow them in pots and keep them on your kitchen counter year-round. The handbook covers both paths.

Do I need special equipment?

No. Herbs are some of the most container-friendly plants in the garden. You can grow this entire bundle in pots on a sunny windowsill, balcony, or back porch. No raised beds needed. Most herbs thrive on neglect – drainage matters more than fertilizer.

How long until I can harvest?

Faster than most vegetables. Basil and cilantro: 4-6 weeks from seed. Parsley and chives: 6-8 weeks. Perennial herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano) take a season to establish, but once established they keep producing for years. Full timing is in the handbook and digital quick-reference cards.

What if I have never gardened before?

Herbs are the easiest entry point into gardening. They tolerate small pots, inconsistent watering, and poor soil better than vegetables do. Start with basil – it's the most rewarding herb to grow and one of the most expensive at the grocery store. The handbook walks you through each variety.

Do I get instructions with the seeds?

Yes. Every seed bundle includes:

The Herbly digital handbook – deep teaching on every variety, troubleshooting, and a sowing calendar for your zone.

– Per-variety digital quick-reference cards – at-a-glance info to pull up on your phone while you are in the garden.

Our gift bundle also ships with the printed handbook for the kitchen-counter reference experience.

What about shipping and returns?
